Forget the fear of artificial intelligence spiralling out of human control, the immediate and tangible challenge is how generative AI is reshaping the workforce today. While some envision a future marked by heightened productivity and enhanced job satisfaction, others fear it could lead to widespread job loss and societal disruption.
We recently conversed with the CEO of a major US tech company, who is deeply invested in the potential shifts AI might bring to the employment landscape and they shared insights from discussions they have had with pioneering companies integrating generative AI into their operations. Interestingly, while some of these companies see AI as a means to replace jobs, the predominant trend is towards augmentation rather than outright replacement. For instance, one company utilises generative AI to draft descriptions for a vast inventory of products, which are then refined by human copywriters who focus on adding creative and engaging elements to the content. This not only streamlines operations but also enriches the job roles of the copywriters.
Whilst remaining optimistic about AI's role in the workforce, emphasising that technological advancements have historically not led to a net decrease in jobs nationally, we was told that the ultimate impact of AI was suggested to hinge significantly on an organisations strategic engagement with the technology and the potential for AI to empower particularly mid-level skilled workers is significant, but realising this potential requires thoughtful consideration and strategic implementation.
Discussing the deployment of AI in companies, it is recommended to take an educational approach before roll out - In a competitive labor market, companies are motivated to maximise the efficiency of available talent, which often leads to innovative uses of technology. However, critics promote that the narrative by some AI developers, which focuses heavily on AI's capacity to replace human workers, often overshadows its potential to augment and enhance job roles.
On the topic of artificial general intelligence (AGI), AI that matches human cognitive abilities, it can be viewed as distracting and unproductive, especially given the current concerns among workers in various sectors about AI threatening their jobs.
In conclusion
The focus moving forward should be on importance of thoughtful AI deployment, aiming for outcomes that will satisfy societal needs and enhance the workforce in the long term. While AI does not inherently reduce overall employment, its impact on inequality and individual job sectors can vary significantly, necessitating careful consideration and adaptive strategies.
